Dream Interpretation Basics

Once we've been given a dream, there are a few steps that we need to follow in order to understand and decipher it's meaning.

The first thing is to write it down as soon as possible. If we wait too long, we will often forget the dream altogether or forget some important parts. Having a dream journal, apart from your daily journal, is a good idea because it gives you more room for writing, drawings, pictures, ............
For example, I have a separate dream journal in which I record the entirety of my dream along with any drawings and diagrams.

But I also have a daily journal and in this journal, I write the title only of my dream on a particular date. Dreams are not meant to be hanging out there on their own. God inserts them into the daily fabric of our lives to guide us in our decisions, to give revelations about relationships or situations at work or to help us see events from a different angle and so forth. So when I re-read the entries in my daily journal, I see the date of my entry and the title of my dream, I remember the dream, and then I can see how the dream fits into what was going on at that time in my life. This practice will often release more insight into the meaning of our dreams, especially when we have a look back. This practice can often release "aha" moments and help us understand what God was doing at that point in our lives. And this helps us trust Him more in our present and future situations.

The second thing we do is to ask the Holy Spirit to help us decipher the message that God has sent. This is the most important step. There is definitely acquired skill in dream interpretation, but it is the Holy Spirit who breathes life upon all revelation.

Then we move on to the third step, which is to decide whether we were doing one of 3 things in the dream: whether we were observing, participating or whether we were the focus.

When we are the FOCUS of the dream, it is very clear that all the action revolves around us.
