Alligators in Dreams

Many years ago, Marcel had a dream where an alligator was going through a hole in our living room floor to get into our basement.  Suddenly, a tiger's white head came shooting out of the hole!  Back then, we knew enough about dream interpretation to realize that this alligator was not a good sign, but we didn't have anywhere near enough knowledge to really know how to decipher all of the symbolism and understand what God was saying at the time.

Since then, praise be to God, we've learned that alligators and crocodiles usually symbolize gossip, and we now know that the Lord was pointing to a vulnerability (hole) in our lives (living room) that was enabling the enemy, working through people, to attack us by spreading lies and gossip in the community.  This alligator wanted to make a home in the foundation of our lives (basement) so that we would come intro agreement with the lies and the slander in order to undermine our calling.  So the Lord was letting us know that Marcel needed to rise up as the righteous protector of our home life (white tiger) to come against this gossip by using his authority as a son of God.

The Lord does not want anything coming against our purpose and mission so He will let us know what kinds of attacks are being levelled against us so that we can then pray against these negative words and come out of agreement with them.  Years later, we eventually did so!

Alligators have a big, dangerous mouth full of very sharp teeth. So they represent people of influence who have a "big mouth" that spreads rumours, gossip and slander with aggressive, vicious and biting words.  Because they have a large mouth, this also means that their words will have a significant degree of influence that many will unfortunately listen to, thereby spreading through the community.

Another characteristic of alligators is that they have a very powerful tail, so there might be occasions where you will come against the gossip but the person will defend themselves with "tales" (tail), lies and fabrications.  The key to dealing with these lies is to keep their mouth shut by not giving them a "voice".  When an alligator's mouth is shut, it is then much easier to overcome.  This too is done through prayer for the most part.

If the alligator in your dream is lurking just below the surface or is somewhat camouflaged, this indicates that the person who is spreading the gossip is doing this surreptitiously, going around behind your back in such a way that you will be taken by surprise.

An alligator will often launch an attack by grabbing its victim with its mouth, will spin it violently and will then pull it down under water to drown.  A gossip will do the same by taking control (grabbing) with its words (large mouth) and will twist the truth (spinning) to eventually bring its victim down to suffocate or drown in a sea of lies and slander.

Just last year, some intercessor friends of ours were praying for us and the Lord gave them the following image:

I was sitting down and beside me was a black purse with money floating into the purse. As the money would enter my purse, a grey snake with scales and a large mouth like that of an alligator would eat the money.  They prayed that this "curse" would be lifted off my life and saw St. Michael the archangel who came and stabbed the snake/alligator in its stomach with his sword.  This made the money float back into my purse which had now turned to silver and gold.

Apart from being a fantastic story of deliverance, this episode in our life shows how much the Lord wants to come to our rescue and what can be accomplished through prayer.  Whether we interpret a dream, a vision or an image, the same principles apply.  Through this particular image,  the Lord was showing us that even though I was receiving favour from heaven (money floating down) there was someone who was spreading lies (snake) and gossip (alligator) in order to stop the flow of God's provision towards me, but also to undermine my identity and sense of self (purse).  The intercessors came against this evil plan and the Lord destroyed the gossip and redeemed the whole situation (purse turning to gold and silver)!  Praise the Lord!

If an alligator shows up in your dream, the thing to do is to pray that God will break the power and influence of every word of gossip, slander and lie and then forgive everyone you suspect of having participated in its propagation through your particular community.  If you know what is actually being said, come out of agreement with those words and come into agreement with what the Lord says about you as His son or daughter.

Alligator dreams are amongst the top 20 commonly occurring dreams along with teeth dreams, money dreams, vehicles, houses and wallet dreams.  And like other symbols such as spiders, scorpions, flies and frogs they are usually of a negative nature, unless of course, you happen to be wearing crocodile shoes! 😀

Proverbs 20:19

The bearer of gossip/slander lets out secrets;

do not mingle with chatterers.

Proverbs 26:20, 22

Without wood a fire goes out;

without a gossip a quarrel dies down.

The words of a gossip/slanderer are like choice morsels;

they go down to the inmost parts.

Romans 1:29

They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil;... Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
